Kalajoki municipality is located in the North of Finland 130km south of the city of Oulu. The municipality's economy is based on local agriculture, steel work and tourism with Finland's busiest summer tourist destination located around the sand dunes of Hiekkasarkat.
The town of Kalajoki is also in close proximity to the development of a Finlands 5th Nuclear reactor plant which is currently being located in Pyhäjoki some 35 km from the town.
There has also been a large investment in wind towers made in the municipality with 150 wind towers being built. These sectors of the local economy often have strong ties to international companies and as a result, workers.
There has been an influx of foreign workers into the relatively small population of Kalajoki over the past years and it is planned and forecasted that this number will only increase. In addition to this rise in foreign workers, Kalajoki is also open to and accepting refugees and asylums seekers.
