Malmö is the commercial centre of southern Sweden and an international city, in transition from an industrial city to a city of knowledge. The city has 330 000 residents from approximately 170 different nationalities and is rapidly growing.

The increased number of refugees arriving in Malmö in 2015 led to the biggest efforts ever in Sweden to meet people escaping from war and persecution. The municipality is first and foremost responsible for unaccompanied minors, but also supported the Migration Authority in welcoming asylum seeking adults and families. Due to the current situation the demographic prognosis have been adjusted: the city is expected to grow with approximately 33 000 inhabitants between 2016-2019. During the same period 25 000 asylum seekers are expected to live in the city, with their right to take part of the municipality’s services.
The City of Malmö aims to be a role model for how Sweden deals with the situation with many new inhabitants in a short period of time.
